The Deep Sleep Deep Dive Here's something that might surprise you: if you lost just 30 minutes a night in 2025, that adds up to 182.5 hours a year! That's more than a whole week of sleep! If you want to start 2026 feeling better, sleep is the best place to begin. I'm Dr. Michael Breus, also known as The Sleep Doctor. This week, I'm taking over "While You Were Sleeping" to help you get back on track by focusing on what's actually behind your sleep issues.
Here are two of the biggest misunderstandings I see, and why getting the right label matters: "If I'm in bed for 8 hours, I should feel rested." Time in bed doesn't automatically equal restorative sleep. If your night is fragmented by micro-awakenings or breathing disruptions, you can technically "sleep" for 8 hours and still wake up feeling like you barely got any rest. | | "Snoring is annoying, but it's harmless." Not always. Loud, frequent snoring, especially if it comes with choking, gasping, or pauses in breathing, can be a sign of obstructive sleep apnea. And sleep apnea can break up your sleep all night long without you fully realizing it, leaving you exhausted the next day.
Here's a quiz to see if your snoring is a red flag! | | Sleep Quiz About what percentage of people with obstructive sleep apnea are undiagnosed? A. 20% B. 40% C. 60% D. 85% Scroll to the bottom for the answer, and why this number matters more than most people realize.

| | Quick Sleep Tips For Every Chronotype Not everyone is built to wake up with the sun! Your chronotype is your body's natural, genetically programmed timing for when you feel most alert or tired throughout the day. There are four animal archetypes—Lions, Bears, Wolves, and Dolphins—to describe different 'chronotypes,' or natural sleep-wake patterns. One of the biggest mistakes I see is trying to force a sleep schedule that doesn't match your biology. Here's a quick way to work with your chronotype instead of against it:
🦁 If You're A Lion… You tend to fall asleep early and wake up early, but you may crash mid-afternoon. → Get Through the Afternoon Slog
🐻 If You're A Bear… You're the "most common" chronotype and do best with consistency, but late nights throw you off fast. → Find a Steady Wake-Up Time
🐬 If You're A Dolphin… You're a light sleeper with an active mind, and you may struggle with insomnia or frequent wake-ups. → How to Fall Asleep Fast
Not sure what your chronotype is? → Find Your Sleep Chronotype | | | | |
Quiz Answer The correct answer is D. 85%.
It's estimated that up to 85% of people with obstructive sleep apnea are undiagnosed! Many people assume snoring is "normal," or they don't realize their sleep is being disrupted because they don't fully wake up. | | Win Private Sleep Coaching with The Sleep Doctor I want to personally help you get the best rest of your life.
