Team South Korea Takes Gold at 2026 International Snow Sculpture Championships
Breckenridge Tourism Office
Many of us consider the snowmen we build in the park to be works of art (and they absolutely are), but the talented contestants in the International Snow Sculpture Championships take icy creations to another level — literally. Following 94 hours of nonstop carving at the Riverwalk Center Plaza in Breckenridge, Colorado, the 2026 winners were announced in a Wednesday awards ceremony. The gold medal went to Team South Korea, the only team this year with a woman captain, Mi Kyoung Kim. Their sculpture — titled "Beauty Beyond Difference: Harmony of Coexistence" — includes orbs that symbolize life, diversity, and coexistence, per a press release. "Everything worked well: the interior, the exterior, close-up, and at a distance," said judge George Lundeen. "The piece morphs and changes shape as you walk around it." Team Mongolia took silver for their piece, "Lassoing Time," and Team India nabbed bronze with "Corn: The Ultimate Domesticator." Though the contest doesn't award cash prizes, the gold, silver, and bronze winners each received a trophy, and the People's Choice and Artists' Choice victors also walked away with awards. Take a look at this year's magnificent sculptures.

Prehistoric Giant Set to Become the First-Ever State Shark

Maryland may soon be the first to have a state shark — but you won't see the sea creature swimming in the Chesapeake Bay anytime soon. After dominating oceans for around 20 million years, the megalodon went extinct some 3.6 million years ago. But earlier this month, a Maryland state senator and House delegate introduced legislation to designate it as the official state shark. Approximately three times the size of a modern great white shark, the megalodon may have reached up to 82 feet and 66,000 pounds, per Popular Science, making it the largest-known shark species in history. Since the predators primarily inhabited shallow waters along the East Coast, their massive serrated teeth, which could grow as large as 7 inches, have been unearthed in multiple Maryland counties, and 1,700 of them are currently housed in the state's Calvert Marine Museum. More than just impressive relics from a long-lost era, the fossils are "a reminder of the important role modern and prehistoric sharks have played in shaping past and present ecosystems," notes the bill, which would go into effect Oct. 1 if enacted. Stephen Godfrey, a curator of paleontology at the museum, told WMAR Baltimore: "To me, this is such an iconic animal. I think it's time for megalodon to take center stage as the first shark designated as a state shark."

This Harlem Nonprofit Supports Young Figure Skaters on and off the Ice

Many aspiring figure skaters of color face high barriers to entry in the expensive, white-dominated sport — but one organization is out to change that for girls in Harlem, New York. For nearly 30 years, Figure Skating in Harlem has offered sliding-scale figure skating classes to young women of color, as well as scholarships to skating camps and opportunities to showcase their skills in shows and competitions. The nonprofit also provides off-ice lessons in leadership skills, STEM concepts, college prep, nutrition, economic empowerment, and more, noting on its website that it melds education and figure skating to "build champions in life." Eighty-eight percent of its students maintain a B or higher grade average, and in 2025, 100% of seniors graduated high school and enrolled in college. Last February, Figure Skating in Harlem was featured in a five-part docuseries on Disney+ called Harlem Ice, which founder Sharon Cohen told Beyond Sport was an "unbelievably exciting" opportunity to share their sisterhood with the world. "Our students and team members are true role models with their grit, grace, and resilience," she added. "We hope they will greatly inspire girls around the world to follow their dreams and make their dreams happen by moving past fear and stereotypes and into opportunities and possibilities to define themselves." Watch the girls in action.

Smashing burgers and expectations
Kyle Nelson was mulling over ideas for what to call his new burger joint in Wilmington, North Carolina, when inspiration struck in the form of a fun-loving 6-year-old named Zeke. At 3 months old, he was diagnosed with juvenile myelomonocytic leukemia. So Nelson, whose best friends are Zeke's parents, dubbed his eatery Zeke Smash — and pledged to donate 5% of its profits to children's cancer charities. "I can make great food that people will enjoy, and I can use this platform to bring awareness and highlight an issue that isn't really talked about a whole lot," Nelson said. "And possibly do some good, too."
