| background: J Dusi Wines is a boutique Paso Robles powerhouse, woman owned and operated by the inimitable Janell Dusi. She was born right there on the Dusi Vineyard, where her grandpa Dante, a true "Don" of winemaking, taught her the old-world Italian ways. The Dusi family's roots run deep in Paso Robles, stretching back to the early 1920s, with sustainable farming practices passed down for ninety years. This isn't just a business; it's a family tradition with a new perspective, and Janell's intimate involvement—from driving the tractor to hand-picking her own fruit—ensures every bottle is a unique, handcrafted gem.
"The Don," named in honor of Janell's father, Don Michael Dusi, is a testament to blending tradition with progress. For this 2021 vintage, Janell brings together a formidable blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (66%) and Sangiovese (34%). She's a farmer first, specializing in Zinfandel and these bold red wine blends, making wine in the most native form: handpicking, hand sorting, and even foot stomping some of her fruit. Her signature style focuses on non-invasive wine handling and gentle barrel aging. This "Capo" of a wine is aged for 16 months in 80% French Oak and 20% American Oak, with a combination of new, juvenile, and neutral barrels, all designed to respect and reveal the natural varietal characteristics. It's a wine that truly embodies its name, commanding respect.
The 2021 J Dusi The Don pours a rich carmine in color. On the nose, you'll be greeted by aromas of black cherry soda and lavender, along with aged balsamic and a bit of spice. This blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese has predominant yet approachable tannins. The palate opens with dark fruits leading into its mid-palate of currant, herbed sourdough, and finishes with a lengthy expression of dark cherry compote and cocoa nib. It's a round experience, laced with ripe dark berries and worn leather, all carried by a hint of espresso that rides through its expressive and lengthy finish. | |
